A few weeks ago I was lucky to be invited to a fantastic blogger event by the lovely Grabble team, where I was treated to an amazing mini neck and shoulder massage by a therapist from Gina Conway Aveda Salons and Spas. As I wrote in my review of the event (here) I really really enjoyed my massage and felt so relaxed I nearly fell asleep, despite the fact I was in a room full of people on a busy Thursday night in Covent Garden! So you can imagine my delight when the lovely Emily from Gina Conway contacted me and asked if I’d like to have another one errr yes please! I got even more excited when Emily invited me to have not only a neck and shoulder massage, but also a haircut and treatment in the Gina Conway Aveda Salon and Spas Westbourne Grove branch, where they carry out extra special pampering “Spa Haircuts*“. I know right?!
Emily explained that the clever folk at Gina Conway know how busy us Londoners are and that it’s hard enough fitting one pampering session in, let alone two. So they decided to create “Spa Haircuts” where clients get their choice of express spa treatments in the same appointment as their hair cut, and they even take place in the Hair Spa so you you don’t even have to waste precious time going between lots of treatment rooms etc. Good idea eh?!
I’m a bit of an architecture fan, so was impressed with the Westbourne Grove branch of Gina Conway before I even walked in the door! It looked so pretty and impressive from the outside with it’s period arches and pillars, and had gorgeous detailing inside too. My hairstylist Priscilla later told me that the building used to be a bank, which explains it’s ornate features. The salon was huge inside but cleverly designed so that each workstation felt nice and private, which I really liked as often you can feel quite on display at the hairdressers! (does anyone else feel like that or is it just me?!) The lighting was nice and soft too so you felt like you were in a decadent spa rather than a high street hairdressers.
I was given a nice cool glass of water and sat down to meet Priscilla, who cut and styled my hair, and Fats who gave me my mini massage and also washed and applied a protein treatment to my hair. Priscilla was so lovely and asked lots of questions to understand what I wanted from my hair cut, what my typical hair routine is and any hair issues I have. I hadn’t had my hair cut in quite some time (about 8 months yikes! Bad beauty blogger!) and Priscilla gave me great suggestions on how much I should have off to bring my hair back to health and also make it look a lot thicker and volumised (my dream!) I felt in such good hands with Priscilla, and not at all nervous like I sometimes do when seeing a new hairdresser. She was so good at giving me ideas on how to style and cut my hair and explaining how the final look would be and what effect it would have. She was also never pushy and listened to my thoughts and opinions too, which I have to say is quite rare in my experience of hairdressers as often they’ve just done what they want to do, regardless of whether it matches up with my requests and thoughts! We decided to take a good 3 inches off the ends, to get rid of the dry wispy ends and bring some life back to my locks.

I was then whisked downstairs to the Hair Spa (love that name!) and Fats gave me my neck and shoulder massage which was sooooooo relaxing! The lighting in the spa was really low and lovely scented candles were lit. Even though there was another lady having her hair washed in there, it felt really tranquil and peaceful. I then moved over to the hair washing station and Fats and I had a good chat whilst she applied a protein treatment to my hair to promote strength and healthy growth.
I then went back upstairs to Priscilla who set to work tackling my limp locks and split ends. Again I was struck by how I was asked my opinion and if I was ok with how the cut was going, which was just the right level of attentive. I also never felt like I was being rushed through the chair like I have done so often in the past. Priscilla also spoke me through various colour treatments such as ombré and balayage which she though I may like and would work with my hair, as well as giving me lots of hints and tips on how to give my hair as much volume as possible (trust me, I need as many as I can get!)
Priscilla also told me lots of stories about how the Aveda brand was created, telling me how the creator’s mother was a hairdresser and his father was a herbologist, so he bought the two together to create Aveda – a company which produces ethical hair products made from natural ingredients. Awesome! She also told me how the company still works today to ensure all ingredients for their products are sought ethically, and also the process by which Gina Conway hand picks the stylists for her salons.

I was absolutely thrilled with the final result. My hair immediately looked so much healthier and shinier, with a lot more body and bounce than it did when I walked through the door. I loved the new shape Priscilla gave me, and the light feathering she’d cut into the front section of my hair to give the illusion of depth. Thank you Priscilla!
