Lifestyle // Looking Forward to 2018

Yes I am jumping on the new year new me bandwagon. Yes I do it every year. No I never stick to it. But ya know, a girls gotta try. I last posted my Look Back at 2017 so thought I’d also put together a few things I’m going to strive to achieve in 2018.

MONEY

My name’s Emsy and I am TERRIBLE with money. Yep. Absolutely awful. I spaff cash on utter rubbish, have a total disregard for budgets I set myself and am far too good at telling myself “treat yo self”. Well no more! I do not need to spend £4 a day on Starbucks, nor do I need to buy another pair of black ankle boots and I absolutely do not need to buy any more Harry Potter tat from Primark (ok that last one I do). 2018 is the year I sort my finances out, get back on the saving train and be more careful about what I spend my money on. The £962 I would spend on Starbucks a year could be an absolute banger of a holiday.

TRAVEL

I managed to fit in some pretty good travel adventures in 2017 and want to do the same in 2018. I’ve already got trips to IcelandNew York and (exotically) Birmingham booked and I am hoping to go to India for a friend’s wedding too. I’m pretty sure Andy and I will squeeze in a trip to Budapest as well and I’m keen to squeeze in a couple of UK adventures if we can too - hello Chester Zoo! Travel plans will be my ultimate push for getting my spending goal sorted.

PLASTIC

Another confession - I get through plastic likes there’s no tomorrow. And as David Attenborough says, there will be no tomorrow for many species if we continue to consume plastic the way we do. I became a lot more environmentally minded after working on a game reserve in South Africa last year, and watching Blue Planet has wedged my commitment to change firmly at the forefront of my mind. I’ve already stopped buying bottles of Coke Zero (also helping my spenny situation above), take in my own metal cutlery to work and have invested in multiple reusable bottles to take out and about with me. Small changes to make our world a better place. Peace.

DRIVING

This year I am going to tackle motorway driving. Since passing my test in March last year, I’ve pootled around my local area every now and then when I can borrow my parents' car, but I still haven’t mastered motorways. I went on once. It wasn’t great. I nearly rolled the car. There was a lot of Clueless-esque screaming and I’ve never heard my dad swear quite like that before. But I didn’t pass just to drive to Lidl and back, blasting Lemonade for all to hear. Ok I did a little. But I’d love to get a good long road trip in this year.

TEFL

I try to learn a new skill each year, to enrich my mind and feel like I have something positive to show for another 365 days on earth. For the last two years I’ve vowed to learn to beatbox. You know, cos that’s so handy. I think it’s time to sack that off now, as I can still only just about manage boots and cats without giving myself an asthma attack. I toyed with learning Spanish (mostly so I can understand the essence of Neymar’s Instastories) but am pledging to pass my TEFL certificate this year. It’s something I always wanted to do when I was younger, and whilst I highly doubt I’ll be rushing off to Vietnam to teach English as a foreign language any time soon, I’d like the option, yaknow.

So there you go, my top pledges for 2018. I also want to go to the gym more, read a book that’s not Harry Potter every month and have as much fun as I bloody well can. So buckle up, let’s make 2018 a good un!

What are your 2018 resolutions?

Lifestyle // A Look Back at 2017

2017 was a bit of a funny year - absolutely awesome in someways, mighty meh in others. I’m all about that positive life though and 2018 is going to be THE YEAR - I’m gonna win the lottery, quit my job and go travelling for ever more, just you wait... BUT I thought before that happens, I’d do a little reflection back on the amazing things that happened in 2017.

TRAVEL

Whilst my body feels a little bit like it’s been chained to my desk for a full 365 days, I actually had some awesome travel adventures last year and ticked off so many places on my bucket list...

Scotland

I kicked off January with a week long trip to Scotland with work - travelling from Edinburgh to Glasgow to Dundee with my girl Soph. We had an absolute blast, got to watch Trainspotting 2 surrounded by people who sound like Begby and had some of the biggest giggles of my year. Just don’t talk about the Dundee Holiday Inn Express.

Margate

My girlfriends and I always hire a cottage for a weekend at the beginning of the year, and in February we headed to hovel-turned-hipster-hangout Margate. I laughed non stop, had long walks by the sea, played board games until my wrist actually hurt from rolling the dice, and consumed my body weight in gin. What more could you ask for.

Bath

In March two of my best friends from Summer Camp, Lauren and Sarah (yep, Sarah from Chicago) came to stay. We had an amazing week - first exploring London, checking out Notting Hill and the Boat Race, then Sarah and I headed up to Bath for a few days. I’ve wanted to tick Bath off my bucket list for the longest time and we had so much fun exploring, catching up and even venturing out to the Cotswolds for all the thatched roof cottage shots. The most British of adventures! Sarah has also since quit her job and gone off travelling the world - so go check out her Instagram for some serious wanderlust - @saraheheller. Homegirl is also one of the funniest people I’ve ever met so spice up 2018 with a bit of Heller in your life.

Milan

In August I hit up Milan. It had never been on my Wanderlust List, but my god it was beautiful! An exciting trip in itself, I went with the guy I’d been dating for 6 weeks (It went well. He’s now my boyfriend. More on him later.) We had an amazing couple of days, strolling through the city with our cameras (he loves photography too), marvelling at the architecture and eating at some of the most incredible places. We even did a day trip to Lake Como which was simply stunning. Blue water, bright sunshine, cold beer. What’s not to love?

South Africa

Probably my biggest travelling adventure of all - I packed my bags and did a solo trip to South Africa to volunteer on a game reserve for 2 weeks. I shit you not, it was one of the most mind blowing and life changing experiences I’ve ever encountered and far exceeded all my expectations. I saw some of the most beautiful animals and scenery, met some amazing people, learnt so much, and helped contribute to the white rhino anti poaching project. There will be a whole post (or 10....) dedicated to this, so get ready to have The Lion King soundtrack stuck in your head for the next few weeks. NANTS INGONYAMA BAGITHI BABA. You are welcome.

Berlin

I also managed to sneak in a cheeky city break to another of a long time Wanderlust List lurker - Berlin. I’d been once before when at school on German exchange, but remember absolutely nothing other than sneaking beers into the school disco and the horrible real zebra hide rug my host family had. Grim. I’ve always wanted to go back as an adult and photograph the iconic city. And photograph we did (sorry not sorry for all the Insta spam). I have also never had such an informative trip before - I learnt SO MUCH. Having never studied history properly in school (we literally learnt about castles for 3 years - useful) my mind was truly opened in Berlin. I don’t remember the last time I learnt so much in such a short space of time! Of course, we also had some incredible food, enjoyed the start of the famous Berlin Christmas festivities and had quite a lot of white wine.

LOVE

2017 saw me fall in love - hello Andy! He’s big into food, travel and photography (and has even got on the Harry Potter bandwagon - hashtag keeper), so I’m sure you’ll see him pop up on my adventures here.

FOOD

2017 was definitely been the year of the amazing food. From an exceedingly boozy brunch at Roka with the girls in January (I still cringe at the thought of that hangover) to a bespoke 12 course tasting menu in Milan, Michelin starred sea food in Berlin, and some incredible meals in London (I’m particularly thinking of you Aqua Kyoto and Saltyard) my taste buds have been well and truly tickled. Andy’s a chef, and as well as making me some ridiculously good homemade pizzas, we’ve eaten in some incredible places this year and I’m super excited for more foodie adventures in 2018.

DRIVING

After 14 years procrastination, I finally learnt and passed my driving test in March (first time I might add - insert sassy girl emoji). It was a bloody long and expensive process and I’m not going to lie to you, I had hissy fits like no 30 year old should have, but I’m so glad I finally got this life skill under my belt. I’ve had a blast driving around and about and it’s been great to be able to take my dad out in the car and give him a bit more freedom too.

So there you go, a few highlights of my 2017. Maybe it was a pretty awesome year after all! I am planning on blogging about some of these adventures in more depth, but if there's anything you particularly want to read about let me know. I’ve also been putting together all my plans and aims for 2018, so will get these up here at the end of the week.

Lifestyle // Look Who’s Back

Well look who came crawling back!

Yep. Me. I did! I can’t quite believe how long it’s been since I posted here - a full 18 months. Quite a lot has changed since then. New house. New job. New adventures. Another new house. New boyfriend. New friends. But I’ve always had emsypickle in the back of my mind with a hankering to return. It’s my little world and I want to come back home to it. I’ve missed writing and being creative. I’ve missed interacting with other bloggers and that network of excellent eggs who get the same things I do. I’ve missed having something of mine that I’ve made myself. I’ve missed having a hobby. I’ve missed having something to lose myself in. I’ve missed having something to do with my spare time rather than mindlessly watch Laguna Beach and nibbling Terry’s Chocolate Orange (its not just for Christmas my friends).

I’m not sure how frequently I’ll be posting (sadly New Job takes up a lot more hours than Old Job) but I’ve missed documenting my adventures and recording the joys of life over here. So even if it’s once a month (or once every 18 months...) it’ll be better than never! That being said, I do have a little round up of my 2017 adventures coming by the end of this week, so come back and check that out.

I’m still into all the travel and all the food (and am praying 2018 will be the year of all the fitness...) so I’m pretty sure that will still be the majority of content you can expect to see but who knows where 2018 will take me. Spoiler - 2017 took me to some amazing places, so if travel and food are your bag, get ready for some glory.

I have been going a little bit insta crazy whilst I’ve been away so if you want to see a sneak peek of what I’ve been up to come say hola over there - @emsypickle

It’s good to be back.
